The Vermont Horse Council is dedicated to the support  of Vermont people interested in all activities and education including horses. One method of reaching that goal is to provide financial support to people wishing to obtain advanced training in equine studies or in occupations which are in direct support of the horse industry.

Vermont Horse Council Grants/Scholarships 2017

The scholarship committee is chaired by Morris Lasell and composed of the following members: June Banks, Cheryl Manning, and Jeannette Cole.  The committee must include at least three members and a chairperson.  The committee is responsible for:

  •      Reviewing applicants and awarding scholarships on at least a quarterly basis
  •      Raising money and/or assisting other committees to fund the scholarships 
  •      Reviewing annually the criteria for each of the scholarships and making improvements or changes to the criteria if necessary
  •      Communicating with membership regarding the committees activities
  •      Publicizing scholarships and subsequent good will received by the recipients as well as the equine industry

The committee has three areas of focus for scholarships:

  1. College scholarship (Cliff Murray and Floyd Fuller Memorial Scholarship for accredited college study)
  2. Youth & 4-H scholarship (4-H, Pony Club, youth activities geared toward individuals 19 years of age or younger)
  3. Adult Continuing Education for VHC members (individual accredited college courses, clinics, American Horse Council activities, workshops).

Cliff Murray and Floyd Fuller Memorial Grant

Cliff Murray and Floyd Fuller were the founders of the Vermont Horse Council circa 1974.  Their joint philosophy is still evident in the mission statement of the Vermont Horse Council.  They lived daily their strong commitment to stewardship, education and community specifically geared toward youth by providing financial and emotional support to many youth throughout their lifetime.  This grant was established to provide financial support to young people seeking either to obtain advanced training in equine studies or to enter occupations that directly support the horse industry.

Amount: One grant annually up to $1000

Selection: Applicant’s ability and aptitude for serious study, community service, leadership, financial need, and achievement with horses

Eligibility:

  • Attend an accredited college/university that provides a quality education in Equine studies or animal science
  • Seek a degree or advanced training in equine or animal studies, or a field of study that directly supports the horse industry
  • Not be a previous recipient

Required documents:

  • Resumé that includes your name, address, and phone number; your parent(s) names, address (es), and phone number(s); schools attended, grades, and work experience (if applicable)
  • Letter outlining your history of involvement with horses, community service and other activities, and future plans
  • Two recommendation letters: one from an experienced horse person attesting to your interest in equine studies and your talents with horses, and one from a school official (school counselor, teacher, etc.) attesting to your ability and aptitude for serious study

Application:

Deadline for application is May 15.  Award of scholarship is August 01.  Applicants need not be members of the Vermont Horse Council to apply.

Vermont Horse Council Youth Scholarship

The scholarship may be used by youth (<19 years old) who is attending an equine activity in Vermont or beyond. 

Amount: appropriated by the scholarship committee and could be up to ½ the total amount of the event.  Funding availability varies year to year. 

Selection:  Applicant goals, stewardship, and resulting equine education.

Eligibility:  Any youth below the age of 19.

Application: Applications are accepted anytime throughout the year.  Applications are reviewed quarterly (Feb 15, May 15, Aug 15, Nov 15); please plan accordingly when submitting requests. You may use extra pages as necessary.

The scholarship may be used by any Vermont Horse Council adult member (>19 years old) for clinics, workshops, accredited secondary education class (computer based or in person), or American Horse Council events. 

Amount: appropriated by the scholarship committee and could be up to ½ the total amount of the event.  Funding availability varies year to year. 

Selection:  Applicant goals, stewardship, and resulting equine education.

Eligibility:  Any adult Vermont Horse Council member

Application: Applications are accepted anytime throughout the year.  Applications are reviewed quarterly (Feb 15, May15, Aug 15, Nov 15); please plan accordingly when submitting requests. You may use extra pages as necessary.
