Northeast Kingdom Equestrian Trails (NEKET)
Volunteers Needed to help with the annual trail clearing day to prepare the tails for the late summer and fall trail riding period. Please contact Jim (see below) if you can devote a morning or whole day to help.
The NEKET system is an ongoing project of the Vermont Horse Council (VHC) in partnership with the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. VHC manages the trails located on the Kingdom Heritage Lands and Victory Basin. The Committee’s purpose is to promote the development of horse trails on these lands.
Much of the trail system is located on public lands, but segments are on private property. The trails include nearly 24 miles of existing roads in the West Mountain Wildlife Management Area and 12 miles of roads on Plum Creek Timber Company property and , 19 miles of trails within the Victory Basin including active logging roads. Equestrian trails are designated by the VHC and the ANR.
The trail system is open following mud season and closes on November 1. Many of the trails/roads are actively used for the removal of logging products so you may encounter logging equipment and other motorized vehicles. The area is also a popular destination for hunting and fishing. Information regarding season dates and regulations can be found on kiosks near the entrances, or by contacting the Fish & Wildlife Office at (802) 751- 0110.
Please practice “Leave No Trace” use of this area. To report concerns and problems such as erosion, down trees, contact Jim Nickerson (see below). To report user conflicts or illegal activities contact ANR at (802) 751-0110.
