Groton State Forest, comprising 26,000 mostly forested acres, is one of Vermont’s best riding destinations and one of the few places with horse camping facilities. There are several state parks within the Forest. At New Discovery State Park there are 8 horse campsites, each with a corral that can accommodate 2 horses. These corrals were provided and are maintained by the Vermont Horse Council (not by the State Park), so please consider making a donation to the Vermont Horse Council to help with maintenance if you stay there.

There are several parking areas where trailers can be parked and many miles of single track dirt trails, rail trail, and dirt/gravel roads within Groton State Forest. Horses are allowed on dirt roads and all trails labeled “multi-use.”

Our partner, Horse Trail Chicks ↗, has detailed information about riding in the Forest and maps of parking areas and trails on their website. Click on the link below to go to their site.
